5 things I’ve learnt from becoming an exec coach after a 20+ year career in IT

  1. We have been conditioned in our careers to value money and promotion above all other considerations. While this mindset might be right for some of us, it is not an approach to life that should be adopted blindly, without careful consideration, introspection and weighing of the other things that matter to us.
  2. There is a clear through line in my own life, from childhood through to early career, from middle management to senior leadership roles, and then into mentoring and training, and finally into coaching. That line is receiving by giving, helping other people; we all do it in different ways, but it is a common human need, and one that grows as we do.
  3. Our challenges are universal: regardless of industry sector, tenure or skillset, the things that we struggle with tend to be very similar. Career clarity and purpose, burnout and overwhelm, becoming more effective in the pursuit of our goals.
  4. The pressure on the system is increasing: many of us are being asked to do more with less. Less resources, less time, less support. As fat is trimmed, and then trimmed again, it has never been more important to ensure we have the necessary support network in place.
  5. No-one knows half as much as they pretend to do. Despite undeniably deep skillsets and experience, the world is held together by everyone winging it to some extent. It’s no wonder that imposter syndrome is so prevalent!
